DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Windsor Public Library for a fun and informative night as George Baker\, a historical re-enactor\, comes as John Adams and describes his 50 year friendship with Thomas Jefferson. \nAdams describes how he and Jefferson met in 1775 at the Continental Congress\, how they jointly convinced the Continental Congress to vote for independence a year later\, their comradeship as fellow ambassadors to England and France\, the competitive presidential elections of 1796 and 1800\, and finally their reconciliation in the last ten years of their lives\, both dying on July 4\, 1826\, the 50th anniversary of the United States. \nThis program will introduce you to facts you might not know and allow you to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in July. \nRegistration required. Come celebrate freedom\, history\, and togetherness with friends and neighbors! \nAt 7 PM\, remember the past with our annual Juneteenth firelight reading. This year we will read Lemuel Haynes’ 1776 essay\, “Liberty Further Extended”. Born in West Hartford in 1753\, Haynes was America’s first Black ordained minister. In this response to the Declaration of Independence\, Haynes argues against slavery\, calls out the hypocrisy of American’s war for “independence\,” and advocates for a better\, freer future.

These documents\, drawn from various periods of our country’s early progress\, together with notable remembrances from Windsor’s history\, will be on display.  \nDon’t miss this unique exhibit that offers a remarkable glimpse into our nation’s past and its connection to Windsor. You can view the exhibit anytime during normal business hours (M-F 8AM to 5PM) at Town Hall in the 2nd floor lobby\, just outside the Town Clerk’s Office.
