DESCRIPTION:At Windsor Town Hall. \nOn July 4\, 1776\, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. Four days later\, on July 8\, it was read out loud to the public for the first time. \nOn July 8\, 2026\, through carefully planned timing\, Americans in all 50 states\, 16 territories\, and across 9\,500 miles will read aloud the Declaration of Independence together. Join us on the steps of Windsor Town Hall to join in the reading or just listen in observation of this 250th anniversary. \nThe reading begins at 6 PM on the dot. If you want to be a reader for this event\, please come at 5:45 to receive a portion of the Declaration. There are only 34 portions of the Declaration and readers will be chosen on a first come-first serve basis on the day of the event. \nThe reading will take approximately 12 minutes. We encourage those who cannot stand for the duration to bring a lawn chair. If you plan on attending (either to read or listen)\, we would appreciate it if you pre-register. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Calligraphy That Inspired a Nation: Learn to Write Like America’s Founders
DESCRIPTION:Who was the calligrapher that wrote the Declaration of Independence? How did they write during the American Revolution? What tools did they use? What lettering style? Can I write like they did?  \nWe will explore these questions and more in this hands-on 90-minute program with calligrapher Debby Reelitz. Participants will get the opportunity to write in script\, use a dip nib and ink\, and scribe a line from the Declaration of Independence. \nReelitz will share pictures of famous colonists\, their desks and writing. Samples will range from Phillis Wheatley to George Washington to John Hancock. Next\, all the participants will learn how to set up their own writing desk\, paper\, nibs\, and ink. Lettering samples and instructions will be provided so participants can write in cursive with dip nib and ink. The end goal is to create a signature for themselves that is inspired by signatures from colonial times. \nRegistration is required. Registration will open on June 1. DESCRIPTION:Join DFAW in person or via Zoom for their fall meeting\nConnecticut played an outsized role in winning U.S. independence from the British Empire and creating a new country. Roger Sherman\, Oliver Ellsworth\, Jonathan Trumbull\, Israel Putnam\, Benedict Arnold\, Nathan Hale\, and others played critical roles. General George Washington and French General Rochambeau held their strategy meetings on how to beat the British in Connecticut. Connecticut earned the nickname “the provisions state” because it supplied so much food and ammunition to the Continental Army. Hundreds died in military actions in Danbury\, Ridgefield\, Saugatuck\, Groton\, New London\, New Haven\, Greenwich\, Norwalk\, and Fairfield. \nNoted storyteller and journalist Mike Allen\, host of the popular podcast Amazing Tales About History\, will walk through many key people and events in Connecticut during our nation’s tumultuous march to independence 250 years ago.
